about
Winter on the prairies is a time of brittle air, shimmering sundogs, and clear, star-filled nights that start early and stay late. Inspired by winter driving, fireside dreams, and the constellation Orion, this song looks at what it means to head home when the days are short. As the years roll by, it’s clear that we can never go back to the way things were, but we’ll always have memories.
lyrics
Dark Time of Year
Chorus:
This is a dark time of year
Orion is clear and seems to own the sky
When life all but disappears
The wind can take your breath away
By skeleton trees, a sign points south
Where we turn off the Number 1.
Both hands finally light on the wheel
Under a cold prairie sun
The fence lines are familiar
Snow sculpted by wind and ploughs
But I don't remember that turn ahead
It's taking too long - we should be there by now
[chorus]
Warm by the fire, the memories fade
As the dog and I stretch and yawn
She loves to help when the drifts are high
Time to get the big boots on
A dream can take you back home
But every stream is a one-way flow
And the dark never stays
Every dawn is a new day
[chorus]
